Günes-Hélène Isitan – Hybridities: Almost Other

Vernissage

Saturday, October 28, 3 pm - 5 pm

About the exhibition

Visual Voice Gallery is delighted to present Hybridities: Almost Other by Montreal artist Günes-Hélène Isitan. Isitan seeks to present revealing "multispecies self-portraits" evoking both our human face and our invisible evolutionary counterpart, our microbiota, in order to question humanity's frontiers. By postulating a human/microbe superorganism, the artist presents a humanity whose embodiment is a multispecies creation, and whose skin isn't a limit, a border, but an ever-changing permeable zone.

About the artist

The biomedia artist Günes-Hélène Isitan holds a graduate diploma in Actual Arts Practice from Sherbrooke University and studied photography and interactive media at Concordia University in Montreal, where she currently lives. She has been working at the intersection of art and biology for the past decade. Her works have been shown in solo and group exhibits in galleries in Canada, the US and in Asia, and has been featured in books and art magazines internationally. The Quebec Arts Council has supported her work, and she is represented both by Galerie uNo (Quebec, Canada) and the SciArt Center (New York, USA).
