Gabriela Reyes Fuchs – Dead Soon

Gallery Opening

About the Exhibition

Visual Voice Gallery is delighted to present the exhibition Dead Soon by Mexican artist Gabriela Reyes Fuchs.

After the passing of her father, Fuchs began to contemplate the (im)permanence of human consciousness after death. Her training in photography and film inspired her to create the project Dead Soon, which fuses technology, art, and science. As part of her investigation, Fuchs took her father’s ashes to the UNAM MicroFilm Lab, where she examined the ashes using a bright field microscope. The scientists at UNAM predicted that all she would be able to see would be black and white images of the powdery specks. However, the microscope revealed an amazing surprise: mesmerizing multicolored nebulae which appeared to fluoresce from within, glowing with an unexplained inner light. Fuchs imaged her father’s ashes using still and video photography, creating compelling images which blur the line between microcosm and macrocosm, between life and death.

Says the artist:
"Questioning reality and its apparent structures, such as our technopolitcal clusters, geospatial relationships, and phenomenologies, is what inspires my work.
As an artist my work is full of scientific and philosophical “quotes”. Interdependence is one of the concepts that interest me the most. My use of scale and dimension is used as a tool to relate myself to the universe and is expressed and achieved through the use of scientific tools and translated into art.
Currently seeking opportunities for interplanetary exhibitions."

The Dead Soon project navigates a narrow path between life an death, the finite and the infinite, the personal and the public. Fuchs’ vivid imagery allows the viewer a glimpse into the dark beyond to see a world of colour and light, and to discover the universe in the ashes of human remains.
