NOIR TABOU

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Often thought of as a "non-colour", in our Occidental culture the colour black evokes the notions of melancholy, pain, death and misery. It gives rise the the expressions "to see everything in black", "to have dark/black thoughts", black humour. Black defines marginality and deceit: the black pirate flag, the black sheep, black magic, the black market.

A "tabou colour", black reminds us of our childhood fears and stirs up dark, contradictory emotions.

The exhibition "Noir Tabou" (Black Tabou) is a continuous exploration of this phenomenon in pictoral form, a dramatic visual expression of the colour - and the concept - of "black". We live with darkness within us, with deception and pain. To survive, we need to lear to play with our own darkness and learn to integrate black into our lives.
